John is weeping. Who is able to open the scroll and bring salvation to consummation? John is weeping, because no one appears able to open the scroll. It is exactly this kind of weeping, weeping out of frustration and potential despair, that Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) found so maddening.
According to Nietzsche there is no scroll to open and no Lamb of God who saves. There is only the strong man and his will to power. What is important about Nietzsche is not only that he drives skepticism and cynicism to its fatal and nihilistic conclusion, but that he shouts out to the world what others whisper in their minds. He cries from the rooftop what others think to themselves.
